《Mindfulness》by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana
A book, suitable for beginners to touch the gateway of Vipassana, But one must understand—the logic in practice is entirely reversed. It’s not first about learning how to cultivate mindfulness, And then begin to practice Vipassana.
The spiritual seeker acts first, And only later realizes these actions, within a framework, Can be synthesized into the concept of “Vipassana”.
Whether the practitioner is aware or not, That they are engaging in the practice of “Vipassana” The act itself is sufficient to yield transformation.
Whether one identifies as a “meditator” or not, She is already walking the path of spiritual awakening. No external doctrine can diminish the power of the practice, For its essence remains intact, unshaken.
Some teachings liken spiritual practice to clearing a new field within the heart. To cultivate a field in the forest, One must first clear away the brush, remove the old growth; Then till the soil, nourish it with loving-kindness, and plant the seeds, Only then can one reap the harvest of wisdom.
Yet, I believe the innate wisdom already resides in the heart, A treasure as sacred as a primordial forest. No matter if it is overgrown, barren, or tangled, This ancient forest is priceless, filled with untamed vitality, A direct connection to the earth, to the universe.
It carries the truth of life, And the most intimate link to the self. Whether this connection brings suffering or bliss, I reject the diminishment of these innate gifts.
If one must disparage the true self to cleanse the heart, To begin anew and acquire wisdom, What true wisdom could such a path provide? I do not believe this wisdom arises from within the self.
For such understanding is born of betrayal of the true self, And submission to external dogmas and conceptual frameworks.
